Culture in Seenland Oder-Spree? Admittedly, most visitors come for the natural surroundings. For the “often melancholy, never overwhelming” appeal of the landscape, as Günter de Bruyn, the greatest chronicler of our region, described it in his declaration of love for the Spreeland. But history has left its mark here too, and it is well worth setting out from Landhaus Alwine on a journey of cultural and historical discovery.
Visit charming towns such as medieval Beeskow, with its well-preserved town wall, castle, picturesque market square and the imposing rebuilt St Mary’s Church – one of the largest in Brandenburg.
Or relaxed Müllrose with its well-maintained lakeside. Bad Saarow has a cosmopolitan air and has been a popular summer retreat for over a century. All of these towns are between 10 and 16 km away and can easily be reached by bicycle.
Baroque in Brandenburg! Kloster Neuzelle is a must for all visitors. This important monastery complex rises in bright yellow above the meadows of the Oderniederung. The monastery gardens have been carefully restored according to historic plans.
Anyone wishing to experience culture live should secure seats for the annual summer festival “Oper Oder-Spree”. Mills, castles, monasteries and churches become atmospheric venues for ambitious artistic productions. In September, film fans head to Bad Saarow for the “Film ohne Grenzen” festival.
And not to be forgotten: unusual museums such as the Wettermuseum Lindenberg, the museum in Tauche dedicated to Australian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, the historic Kersdorf lock with its small museum on the history of the Oder-Spree-Kanal, or the Kleist-Museum in Frankfurt/Oder.
